We are Explore

Chartered in 2001, Explore was founded to meet the critical need in New York City for outstanding public schools.

Our mission is for all of our students to demonstrate the academic skills and critical-thinking abilities they need to be successful in a college-preparatory high school. Graduating Explorers are hard-working, respectful of themselves and others, and possess a love of learning.

Located in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn, our students come from various Brooklyn neighborhoods, Queens and the Bronx. 90% of our students identify as African-American and 10% identify as Latino. 77% of students are eligible for free and reduced meals. Our students have achieved academically-attaining significant gains in literacy and mathematics and frequently surpassing the performance of students from the neighborhood and city schools.

What we Believe

Our students achieve because our teachers believe and expect that they can meet high academic goals.

Our students achieve because our teachers believe that providing an outstanding public education is a key to changing the lives of our students.

Our students achieve because our teachers are reflective and work tirelessly to improve their practice.

Now, we are looking for outstanding teachers to join us.
Our teachers make a significant impact in the future lives of our students.

Teachers at Explore work relentlessly to ensure that all students will enter a college-preparatory high school. Both our school day and school year are longer than traditional public schools. We recognize that being a K-8 school allows us to vertically align our curriculum and to provide students with an excellent education from elementary through middle school.

Our teachers are valued.

Teachers are treated like professionals and are competitively compensated. Cell phones, business cards, and e-mail accounts allow teachers to communicate effectively both with their colleagues, and their students’ parents and guardians. Pre-service activities, staff retreats and professional conferences are among the many opportunities teachers have to reflect upon their practice. Recognizing how intense daily instruction can be, our school calendar gives teachers a term break every 8 weeks.

Our teachers are leaders who shape school-wide decisions.

Teachers are encouraged to participate in school-wide decisions. Feedback through staff surveys and informal check-ins is respected and acted upon. Over the past year, teachers made critical decisions to define our mathematics curriculum, create our instructional frameworks, implement a new behavioral system and revise academic standards. Feedback through staff surveys and informal check-ins is respected and acted upon and teachers play an active role in the PTA.

Our teachers collaborate with highly qualified and motivated colleagues.

o Grade level teams meet weekly to plan and refine lesson plans, analyze student data and discuss student work. Weekly early release days give teachers extended time to plan with their colleagues and to share best practices. Outside consultants, from leading educational organizations such as Urban Education Exchange, A.U.S.S.I.E. and Math Solutions, keep teachers on the cutting-edge of educational practices. Socially, teachers meet outside of the classroom and enjoy the company of their colleagues.

Our teachers work with our students’ families to achieve our ambitious goals.

Families and teachers communicate frequently. Teachers have school cell phones so that parents can conveniently reach them. Our weekly school-wide Blue Memo combined with grade level newsletters give parents up-to-date announcements and academic information. Conferences are held three times a year and academic workshops are scheduled to coincide with PTA meetings, so parents learn ways to support their children at home. Our Annual Winter Dinner and Field Day are other examples of how families and teachers celebrate our students’ achievements.

Are you an Explore Teacher?

o We are looking for NYS certified teachers who have a minimum of 2 years of classroom teaching experience with urban students for all grade levels. Explore welcomes and encourages applicants from diverse backgrounds. Salary is competitive and includes full benefits.

Our teachers are intelligent, creative individuals who are passionate about teaching.

Explore knows that teachers need structure and standards as a starting point for their teaching. We provide teachers with meaningful standards and a framework to work within while also allowing teachers to use their own expertise in shaping their daily plans. In literacy, we balance teaching phonics and teaching comprehension by implementing reading and writing workshops that meet the needs of all learners. In mathematics, we use the Everyday Math curriculum within our own framework, emphasizing the balance between basic skills and problem-solving. We offer students science, art, music, health and gym in addition to the core classroom subjects.
